He is understood to have been pursued for a few minutes and was then arrested in a garden shed.
The follow-up search led to the man being arrested only a short distance away from the shop.
The cash which was taken from the shop was then recovered by gardai.
The arrested man was taken to Ballymun Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
He is believed to be well known to gardai and has a number of previous convictions.
There were no shots fired during the incident and nobody was injured as a result.
An investigation is ongoing, and a search is underway for the suspected firearm which was discarded during the chase.
