Fine Gael has opened up a significant eight point lead on Fianna Fail, according to the latest opinion poll.

The poll shows Fine Gael had increased its support by five points to 33pc, while Fianna Fail has dropped four points to 25pc.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has seen his party's support increase despite battling against rising homelessness figures and an escalating housing crisis.

Micheal Martin will face his TDs and senators on Monday at Fianna Fail's annual think-in and the poll results are sure to be a major topic of discussion.

Mr Martin is still the country's most popular political leaders at 53pc (-1) but Mr Varadkar has jumped six points to 49pc since the last poll.

Elsewhere, Sinn Fein has gone up one to 19pc, the Labour Party is unchanged 5pc and the Independent Alliance are down one to 3pc.

The Green Party is unchanged at 2pc, Solidarity/People Before Profit are up one to 1pc and the S ocial Democrats are unchanged at 1pc.

Unaligned Independents are up one to 10pc, according to the Behaviour and Attidudes/Sunday Times poll.
