Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said he was "taken aback" by the notorious 2014 car park meeting between one of his TDs, John McGuinness, and then-garda commissioner Martin Callinan.

Mr Martin said Mr McGuinness told him Mr Callinan had claimed at the meeting that Garda whistleblower Sgt Maurice McCabe was not to be trusted and was a child abuser. Mr Cal linan has denied this.

Mr Martin was giving evidence at the Disclosures Tribunal, which is probing an alleged smear campaign at the highest levels of the Garda to discredit Sgt McCabe.

Mr Martin said he was "taken aback" after learning of the hotel car park meeting and the "nature of it". He said there were rumours circulating about Sgt McCabe but said no garda had ever given him a negative briefing about the whistleblower.

Mr Martin said Sgt McCabe gave him a dossier on alleged Garda malpractice in the Cavan/Monaghan division and he passed it on to then-taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Mr Martin recalled a meeting he had with 'Ms D', a young woman who had made a complaint against Sgt McCabe which was dismissed by the DPP. Mr Martin said he took the matter "seriously" and forwarded information to Mr Kenny.

He also spoke to Sgt McCabe, who told him the complaint had been investigated fully by the DPP.
