Dublin raider foiled as he robs shop with two armed gardai inside

An armed raider was arrested last night after he attempted to rob a shop in north Dublin - while two armed gardai were inside scanning CCTV.

The 29-year-old attempted to rob a Centra shop on the Coultry Road in Ballymun but didn't realise that two members of the local detective unit were in the back of the premises looking at the CCTV which was from a previous incident.

Gardai confirmed to Dublin Live that the raider appeared to be brandishing a firearm when they entered the shop at around 7.10pm last night.

After entering the premises he threatened staff and demanded that they handed over cash.

While he fled the store moments after with around €800, the two armed guards quickly managed to catch up with him on foot.

He is understood to have been pursued for a few minutes and was then arrested in a garden shed.

The follow-up search led to the man being arrested only a short distance away from the shop.

The cash which was taken from the shop was then recovered by gardai.

The arrested man was taken to Ballymun Garda Station where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

He is believed to be well known to gardai and has a number of previous convictions.

There were no shots fired during the incident and nobody was injured as a result.

An investigation is ongoing, and a search is underway for the suspected firearm which was discarded during the chase.
