This Ireland team can do anything, says Jeff Hendrick
Republic of Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick praised the spirit of his team-mates and urged them to "keep making special nights" after securing a World Cup play-off in Cardiff tonight.
James McCleanâs composed 57th minute strike separated the teams in Cardiff and saw the visitors leapfrog Wales into second place in Group D and take their place in next weekâs play-off draw.
Speaking to RTÃ Sport immediately post-match at Ninian Park, Hendrick admitted it was an "unbelievable" night for Martin OâNeillâs team.
Hendrick played a central role in the all-important goal. The Burnley man robbed Ashley Williams in possession and his right-wing cross close to the end line was met by McClean to sweep home the ball.
Targeting Welsh players on the ball was something the players had hoped would give them some return the Dubliner revealed.
"In the fi rst half they had a lot of time on the ball. Whenever we pressed we thought they could give us something.
"We just gambled on it and James put it in the back of the net.
"It was brilliant, on his bad foot and all. He doesnât do that often," he smiled.
Asked how the win compared to famous wins over Germany and Italy in recent years, Hendrick said it was all about the future rather than looking back for the team.
"They were special [Germany and Italy victories], but they are just memories now. We have got to keep on making special nights like that.
"We knew it would be hard, but when it comes down to one game, the spirit in this group, we can do anything."
