Register shows extensive property and outside interests of TDs

More than a quarter of TDs are landlords while more than a fifth list other occupations in the latest register of TDs interests, published on Wednesday.

While many TDs list one or two residential properties for rental, a smaller number have several properties.

The Kerry TD Michael Healy Rae lists 11 properties for letting or rental in the register, in addition to two properties under renovation or awaiting planning permission.

Mr Healy Rae also has farming and business interests â€" he lists his occupations as postmaster, farmer, a plant-hire business operator and shop owner. His plant-hire busi ness has worked for the HSE and the local authorities, while he also has a contract for the supply of fuel to Kerry County Council.

His brother Danny, also a TD for Kerry, lists his occupations as public representative, publican, farmer and bus hire, and reports contracts with Bus Éireann, Kerry Country Council and Irish Water.

Several members of the Cabinet have rental properties, the register shows. Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed lists four properties in Macroom, Co Cork, and a holiday home in Glenbeigh, Co Kerry.

Holiday home

Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty lists a holiday home in Wexford, a commercial unit in Ashbourne, Co Meath, and a student apart ment in Limerick.

Minister for Culture Josepha Madigan lists an interest in Madigans solicitors and a commercial property in Kimmage, Dublin.

Minister of State for Defence Paul Kehoe lets out two apartments in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, and an apartment on Haddington Road in Dublin.

Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan lists a holiday home in Co Sligo, which is let on a part-time basis. Tánaiste Simon Coveney lists an interest in an apartment in Rochestown in Cork.

Minister for Education Richard Bruton has an interest in farmland in Co Meath and also has shareholdings in a number of companies, as does the Minister for Transport Shane Ross.

Mr Ross, a former stockbroker, lists his shareholdings as Henderson Alternative Strategies Trust (formerly SVM Global); Bank of Ireland and Independent News and Media.

He also lists shares in a company called Altas Investments plc which has an interest in toll roads. He added: “These shares have been valued at approximately €800 and are on the market.”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar lists only his apartment in west Dublin and a honorary golf club membership in Elm Park, Dublin 4.

Fianna Fáil TD Seán Haughey lists interests in the Haughey family holding company, Larchfield Securities, established by his late father, the former taoiseach Charles Haughey, who was criticised for accepting gifts by the McCracken and Moriarty tribunals of inquiry.

Blue chip firms

Mr Haughey also lists extensive shareholdings in a variety of blue chip and technology firms including Amazon, Alphabet, Bank of Ireland, Diageo, British Land, Facebook and Nestle. He also lists two Dublin properties for rental.

Fine Gael TD Kate O’Connell, who is a pharmacist, lists a number of properties and pharmacy businesses in Dublin, owned jointly with her husband, who is also a pharmacist. She is also an executive director of a company called Fake Tan Online Limited, though she describes it as “non-trading”.

Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness lists a number of premises in Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick and Tipperary for letting.

Independent Michael Lowry lists lands in Tipperary and also land in Wigan, England.

Former taoiseach Enda Kenny lists travel and hospitality, including to a number of golf events. He attended the Times CEO summit in London last year, and was a guest of Sky Ireland at t he British Masters Pro-Am event.
