A Dublin man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murder of Vincent 'Vinnie' Ryan.

Paul O'Beirne (35), of Cole-park Drive, Ballyfermot, is accused of the murder of Ryan at McKee Road, Finglas, on February 29, 2016.

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old man from Finglas was arrested yesterday in England on foot of a European Arrest Warrant on the same charge.

Tracksuit

He is in custody, and it is n ot yet known if he will fight his extradition to Ireland.

Gardai have obtained directions for him to also be charged with Ryan's murder. The 25-year-old father was shot dead while sitting in his car.

Mr O'Beirne, dressed in a navy tracksuit, sat silently with his arms folded during the hearing before Judge Victor Blake at Dublin District Court yesterday evening.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Det Sgt Gavin Ross of Finglas Garda Station.

He told Judge Blake that the accused was arrested at his home address at 2.36pm yesterday on foot of a warrant issued by the district court.

The warrant was then handed in to court.

Det Sgt Ross said Mr O'Beirne was taken to Ballyfermot Garda Station, where he was charged.

The court heard he was handed a copy of the charge, and in reply after caution said: "No- thing got to do with me at all."

Det Sgt Ross confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that Mr O'Beirne is to face trial on indictment in the Central Criminal Court.

The detective applied to the court to remand Mr O'Beirne in custody, to app-ear at Cloverhill District Court on Friday.

Defence solicitor Padraig O'Donovan consented to the garda application. Judge Blake adjourned the case for mention until Friday for a book of evidence to be prepared.

Mr O'Beirne was granted legal aid after his solicitor furnished the court with a statement of his means and told the judge he was on social welfare.

There was no garda objection.

Mr O'Donovan told the court that his client agreed to appearing via video-link at his next hearing.

Ryan, a younger brother of murdered Real IRA chief Alan Ryan, was shot dead in broad daylight as he ate a roll outside his girlfriend's home.

In October 2013, he and his pal Darragh Evans (27) were cleared by the Special Criminal Court of charges of possession of an assault rifle and a handgun at Clonshaugh Walk, Coolock, on September 15, 2011 - the same day on which notorious drugs trafficker Michael 'Micka' Kelly was shot dead.

It emerged at Ryan's funeral that the last conversation he had with his partner, Kelly Smyth, was about getting married.
