Justine McCarthy: Feeble Irish constitution puts women at risk. The eighth amendment has left a string of victims
Doctors differ and patients die. And doctors cannot even agree about that. Mary Holohan, a consultant obstetrician, claimed last Friday that pro-repeal advocates were frightening women by saying the eighth amendment was curtailing doctors in treating pregnant women who are ill. Not so, she said, echoing an assertion by Eamon McGuinness, a retired professor of obstetrics, that âno such restriction existsâ. Yet some of her colleagues, including Peter Boylan, chairman of the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, the former president of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, are adamant that the constitutionâs equal right to life for a woman and the developing life inside her does hamper the healthcare of expectant women; sometimes lethally so.
