Garda checkpoints Ireland: Over 50 Irish motorists caught speeding already during National Slow Down Day
Early figures on National Slow Down Day reveal 57 motorists have been caught speeding out of 35,000 checked.
Over 1,000 speed checkpoints will be set up across Ireland throughout the day.
A garda spokesperson has said all 57 will receive Fixed Charge Notices, three penalty points each on their licences and will have to pay an â¬80 fine.
Meanwhile, motorists in Wexford were thanked after 2,750 vehicles in Enniscorthy complied with the speed limit.
Stations in Laois and Offaly, where over 2,000 drivers were checked, also detected no speeding offences.
A spokesperson said: "Thank you to the people who were compliant. we can make our roads safer by slowing down.
"If we can do that we'll reduce injuries and we'll reduce deaths and we'll make our communities safer."
